tourist launches at Paihia, late 1950s

A tourist publicity photo showing the jetty at Paihia.  Apart from ferries to Russell across the water, there are launches for sightseeing excursions around the Bay of Islands as well as fishing trips.  This general area had an  important role in NZ's early European history.

Must be a little later than that. The boat backing around is the Bay Belle which began work in late 1961 on the famous Cream Trip for Fullers. In 1973 she started work on the Paihia to Russell passenger service. She was an icon of the Bay through my life, and retired on the 25th of March this year. A more recent photo is here: http://www.bayofislandsinfo.co.nz/Bay-Belle-Ferry.html
