Vulcan railcar at Brunner, 1961

We commented on the Brunner coalmine in a post last November.  The Brunner station building lasted a while longer, even if it probably had no passengers after mining ceased.  We are not sure why the Vulcan railcar would have been in the loop, unless something more important was coming on the main line.

Further over can be seen the wrecked B that was involved in a head on collision near Brunner in the previous November.  Details plus a photo of the accident are in the book Danger Ahead: New Zealand railway accidents in the modern era.

there seems to be a little bit of speed blur at the bottom, perhaps the photographer took the picture out of the back of a guard's van?
